Occupational standards form the basis of the government's strategy for vocational qualifications and training. Put simply, they describe what competent people in a particular occupation should be able to achieve. They provide a framework for progression beyond degree level, for vocational training and for professional development and career planning. They can also be used for structuring learning and training programs both for professionals and for archaeology's large voluntary sector.
Archaeologists are a distinct group of people, undertaking a wide variety of activities from field practice to laboratory work, information management to education, specialist research to artefact curation and display. The range of skills used in these activities is exceptional; two to three times greater than in comparable groups or professions.
Occupational standards for archaeology have been developed on behalf of the ATF by the Institute of Field Archaeologists and the Cultural Heritage National Training Organisation in consultation with a cross-section of the discipline.
Use the NOS map or the section links in the navigation bar to explore the standards documents.
